When are you too old to cosplay?

I was trolling about on the internet as usual on Sunday, and spotted on article about an anime picnic in Westmount, Canada. The article mentioned that a lot of the attendees dressed up as their favorite anime characters, but a few of the attendees noted that it isn’t too common to see someone in their 30s do the cosplay ritual. Is 29 really the point where cosplay loses its flavor?

From the article:

“You don’t get them much older than the high 20s, but many of my friends who are into it are in their mid-20s. Once you get older some people are worried about doing something like this in the public eye. But if you know enough people to go with you, you feel more comfortable.”

Now, I’m sure we’ve all seen people past the big 3-0 cosplay at Anime cons, but by and large they look pretty pathetic. The 40 year old in the naruto costume just doesn’t quite strike an imposing figure. But tastefully done - like an older woman dressed as Tsunade or an older guy as Lupin- that I can get behind. You don’t often see it though. I do wonder if at a certain age dressup becomes unappealing to most sane people (Star Wars fans excluded, of course)

Oh yeah, the original Anime Picnic article is here, complete with picture.
