Death Note movie at the S.F. Asian-American Film Fest
The folks hosting the San Francisco Asian American Film festival will be showing the first Death Note movie at 2pm on March 22.
In addition to Death Note, here are some other films they’ll be screening:
Ping Pong Playa - When a ping pong teacher gets injured in a car accident, her slacker son Christopher “C-Dub†Wang must step in to train a ragtag group of kids and defend his family’s honor at the big tournament. A delightful comedy from Academy Award-winner Jessica Yu.
Santa Mesa - Ron Morales’ striking feature debut about a young Filipino American who must return “home†after the death of a loved one. Unable to speak Tagalog and culturally isolated, he must face the aftermath of his mother’s death alone, until he befriends an older photographer and takes an interest in a mysterious and beautiful woman.
Behind Forgotten Eyes - Told through the testimonies of “comfort womenâ€and the soldiers who frequented them, this gripping documentary chronicles Japan’s systematic prostitution of captive women for the service of soldiers in World War II.
3rd South Asian International Shorts 2008 - A rich and textured compilation of South Asian short films from India, New Zealand and the United States. An incredible range of stories and filmmaking styles are on display, from coming-of-age tales to road trip movies to explorations of the complexities of familial relations. Featuring the Oscar-nominated short documentary Salim Baba.
Happiness - Korean hearththrob Hwang Jung-min is a playboy whose heavy drinking sends him into a health clinic, where he meets an angelic beauty dying of a critical lung disease. Their relationship forms the basis of this melodious, old-fashioned yet vibrantly original romance from acclaimed director Hur Jin-ho (Christmas in August).
Glory Boy Days - A misfit crew of teens looks for answers—or at least distractions—in the South Bay in this clever remix of coming-of-age cinema, similar to Colma: The Musical or Better Luck Tomorrow. Fresh from Slamdance, Glory Boy Days redefines Asian American cool.
