News: Anime Expo up 5%, Tokyopop cancels stuff, ADV corrects
I’ve been kind of busy with various tasks, so here’s some random linkage to keep y’all occupied.
ICV2 reports official numbers for Anime Expo 2008 attendance: “An attendance of 43,000 attendees was announced, up from 41,000 last year. We had last year at 44,000 (see “Anime Expo Breaks Last Year’s Record”), but the show’s Chase Wang confirmed that the 44,000 number included professionals.”
That sounds kinda fishy to me. I was there and the attendance seemed a wee bit disappointing, but AX is still the largest convention dedicated to anime and manga in the U.S.
In other news, TokyoPop announced a number of titles they’re cancelling as part of their “revamp”:
Beyond the Beyond Volume 5
Blazin’ Barrels Volume 11
Karma Club Volume 2
Kat & Mouse Volume 4
Kindaichi Case Files, The Burial Francs
Lagoon Engine Volume 6
Lagoon Engine Volume 7
Nosatsu Junkie Volume 7
Queen’s Knight, The Volume 13
Queen’s Knight, The Volume 14
Saver Volume 7
I don’t think anybody is gonna miss those.
And finally, last week ADV announced a list of anime titles they were going to put on their out-of-print list, which included a very generic “Robotech” listing, which led many to believe that all of the Robotech franchise was dropped. Yesterday they fixed that little mistake, and clarified that single DVDs and most box sets of Robotech will indeed go out-of-print, but the Robotech Protoculture Collection with 85 episodes is still available.
The saddest part of the announcement for me is that 5 centimeters per second, a charming little slice-of-life movie, is still on their list of discontinued titles. There were reports that FUNimation was going to pick it up, but it wasn’t listed on their most recent acquisition list that came out just before AX ‘08. Hopefully somebody will pick that up. I mean, come on, it won the Lancia Grand Prize at Future Film Festival this year.
