More on Xam’d anime on PSN: mixed feelings

My last post talked about the exciting news of the release of the Xam’d anime on the PlayStation Network. Great stuff for PS3 and PSP users, right? Well, it turns out the execution is not so great.

First off, you can buy Xam’d episode 1 on the PlayStation Network right now. It’s good to go. And as promised, it does progressively download so you can watch while it’s downloading. It’s decent quality too, and it seems like it might be an interesting series.

Now on the BAD news. It seems like Sony needs to get hit with a clue stick. Hard. The previously mentioned prices of $2.99 and $3.99 for for SD and HD respectively are for RENTALS, not download to own. You get 14 days to watch it, then once you DO watch it you have 24 hours before it locks and you’re basically kept from watching it ever again.

I’m sorry Sony, but as much as I like the effort, this blows. I can go elsewhere and pay those prices for a full MOVIE rental of 1.5+ hours, not just a 25 minute episode. And I can keep that movie LONGER. I’m all for digital distribution, really I am. But this is crazy. FUNimation’s stuff, on the same Playstation Network, is a dollar cheaper for SD episodes and it’s download to OWN. Ball = dropped on Xam’d.

Yeah, I know what you mean. At first I thought they were going to be OAVs, which I would be okay to try it out for the remainder of the series, but for a 26 episode series? Not really. Nobody really wants to shell out over a hundred bucks to see a series that you can’t even own, or, whenever you can, you’d have to pay again. Yeah, it’s completely bull, and they really lost me as a consumer there…
