Librarians scoop up manga at Comic-Con
NPR has an interesting little piece on their site today. They chatted with an unexpected group of manga fans at Comic-Con ‘08: librarians.
From the article:
David Serchay, a Florida librarian, received funding from the Broward County Friends of the Library to attend Comic-Con. He says libraries are paying attention to manga because the numbers are clear: adding comic-book titles to the shelves puts circulation stats “through the roof.”
This is good news for everyone involved. Our nations libraries could use the added readership in these days when non-illustrated books are becoming less popular, and manga fans get a reliable source for new and old titles.

You can definitely see when almost all the manga books have been worn out so much some of the pages fall off (maybe that’s just me). Luckily my college library has a better selection of them than my neighborhood public library.

Not really surprised at this piece of news. It was already this way a year back when I attended a graphic novels publishing conference. The strategy of the librarians is to hopefully, get more Americans reading first since reading isn’t exactly a huge past time of American males who love sport (playing and watching) primarily. They do wish that these people will move on the novels after they get sick of manga first though.
