OEL manga Miki Falls to become a Hollywood film?

Miki Falls coverBrad Pitt’s movie production company, Plan B, has picked up the rights to a four-volume OEL manga series by Mark Crilley titled Miki Falls. I do believe this is the first time an OEL title has gotten mainstream attention. It’s especially interesting since it’s going straight to the big screen via a fairly well known Hollywood studio.

A little bit about Miki Falls:

A story of a stronghearted girl, Miki Falls is about Miki Yoshida’s final year in high school. Miki, a member of the archery club, is intrigued by the new student Hiro Sakurai. Hiro at first is wildly popular with all the students in the school, but then, as he refuses to socialize or talk with anyone, not even the losers will hang out with him. Seeing this, Miki makes up her mind: she will become friends with Hiro Sakurai even if it means overcoming the unwinding truth of Hiro’s life.

I personally had never heard of this series before, and looking at the art, I think it’s especially hard to call this “manga”. Although some of the pages show a definite manga influence, to me it really just seems like a normal American-style comic that happens to take place in Japan. It’s not even published by any of the usual OEL manga suspects (Seven Seas, TokyoPop, etc.), Harper-Collins’ teen imprint publishes it. Methinks the “is it manga if it doesn’t come from Japan” debate will heat up a bit with this news.
