Manga and Tokyopop in the NY Times

The New York Times has an article about how book publishers are turning to manga to possibly boost sales. Tokyopop is featured prominently in the piece, which I’m sure they’re very happy about.

From the article:

“Tokyopop is looking to push manga even further into the mainstream, hoping to gain inroads into mass merchandisers, grocery stores, gift and specialty stores and other places where popular fiction and nonfiction books are sold. As such, Tokyopop says it believes the battle for manga superiority is likely to be as much a fight among distributors as it is a struggle for the best cartoonists, characters and storylines.”

Interesting stuff.

Page 2 of the article, however, is mostly about the tedium of publication distribution. It’s quite boring. I’d skip it if I were you. :icon_cool:

As an intern at Tokyopop, I think this is great! There are alot of nice people working there, and though some of the fans may not believe, they work very hard all day. And yes, the “battle with distributors” bit sounds about right indeed.

Whatever it takes to bring our favorite mediums into the mainstream even further than it is now :D
